Our Story

Backyard Remodel SD was founded with a simple but powerful idea: San Diego homeowners deserve a contractor who thinks exclusively about outdoor and backyard work. Most general contractors divide their attention between kitchens, bathrooms, additions, roofing, and dozens of other trade categories. We chose a different path.

From day one, we have focused solely on the backyard — the retaining walls that hold San Diego's hillsides in place, the hardscape patios that extend living space outdoors, the outdoor kitchens that transform how families gather, and the drought-tolerant landscapes that thrive in our Mediterranean climate. That singular focus has produced something general contractors rarely develop: deep, specialized expertise in everything that happens behind the house.

Through our dedicated focus across San Diego County, we've built a reputation for honest estimates, clean work, and backyards that hold up for decades. We're locally owned, our crews are permanent employees (not day-labor subcontractors), and we've been serving local communities long enough to know their permit offices, soil conditions, and HOA requirements by heart.

Why Backyard Specialization Matters

When a homeowner hires a general contractor for backyard work, that contractor is often learning on the job. Retaining wall engineering, soil compaction, drainage design, outdoor kitchen gas and plumbing rough-in, deck ledger connections, and hillside grading are highly specialized skills that reward deep experience.

We don't do roofing, windows, or interior remodels. Backyards are our entire business — which means:

  • Deeper expertise: Our estimators and project managers have seen hundreds of similar projects. They know what works and what fails in San Diego conditions.
  • Better permit relationships: We pull permits regularly with San Diego's Development Services Department and county offices. Plan checkers know our work meets standards.
  • More refined processes: From design consultation through final walkthrough, our project management system is built specifically for outdoor remodeling — not adapted from interior construction workflows.
  • Honest scope definition: We know when a project needs an engineer's stamp, when drainage changes will affect your neighbor's property, and when the HOA approval timeline will impact your start date. We surface these issues in the estimate, not mid-project.

What Makes San Diego Backyards Unique

San Diego's diverse terrain and climate create backyard challenges that require contractor expertise specific to this region. A contractor who primarily works in flat-lot Phoenix subdivisions will struggle with San Diego's hillside lots and canyon edges.

🏔️ Hillside Lots

Much of San Diego sits on coastal mesas and inland hills. Steep lots require engineered retaining walls, proper drainage, and creative terracing to create usable outdoor space.

🌵 Drought Conditions

SDCWA water restrictions and ongoing drought mean landscaping must be designed for water efficiency. Our landscapes are beautiful AND compliant with current watering norms.

🌊 Coastal Salt Air

Coastal properties face accelerated corrosion of metals, fasteners, and certain materials. Material selection matters enormously within a mile of the coast.

🌍 Seismic Zone

San Diego is seismically active. Retaining walls and structures must be designed and built to seismic standards, especially at heights requiring permits.

🏛️ HOA Requirements

Many San Diego communities have active HOAs with detailed architectural review processes. We've navigated hundreds of HOA submissions and know how to get approval efficiently.

🌡️ Temperature Range

San Diego microclimates vary dramatically — coastal fog, inland heat valleys, and mountain climates all require different material and design approaches.
